Day 23: Astorga to Foncebadón
Just for a change, I had breakfast at the albergue, since it was available at any time (for a donation). So orange juice, muesli, yoghurt etc. It was a great albergue, one of my favourites; I should have taken more photos
I was under some pressure to keep moving today, since my albergue at Foncebadón would only hold my booking until 1pm. Apparently there are too many inconsiderate people who make bookings at multiple locations on the same day so they can decide at the last minute where they want to stay. Many don't even cancel the unused bookings (or at least not in time for it to be released for someone else). No wonder it's so hard to book accommodation!
There was a cold wind blowing all day, although no rain until early afternoon
A look back
A metal bishop blessing
The path
The Arco de Santa Catalina, where the figure raises the arch as the pilgrim passes as a sign of respect and admiration, wishing them a safe journey
Less than 250km to go!
The wild wild west
Seen on the way
There are a lot of crosses on the way (perhaps understandable)...
...but for a few hundred meters, peregrinos had created their own crosses and attached them to the fence beside the path. The photo doesn't do justice to the thousands of these 'sticky' crosses
After Rabanal del Camino, the path eventually started to rise, with uneven stony ground to contend with. Then the rain started, and I was pleased when the small township of Foncebadón came into view
The albergue is nice, although very draconian. "And the one rule here is that there is no hand washing of clothes allowed"
Well, there is no mistaking the consequences of hanging wet washing upstairs! The sticky crosses would have been a great sight ... each representing a story no doubt. My favorite photo today was 'shadow man'. Have a good walk today.
